Why would a ghost visit me?

When I was 14 (I am currently 20), I had just gotten ready to go to bed one summer evening; just climbing into bed.
I hadn't laid down yet when my lamp sitting across the room turned on. I got up, shut it off and climbed back into bed.
This happened 2 more times before I unplugged it and climbed back into bed for the 3rd time.
When I finally got under the blankets, I glanced where the lamp was and saw a figure of a man.
Not freaking out, I climbed out of bed and, the way the moonlight came into the room, I could see the entire physical form, every detail. He had jet black hair (I have dirty blond hair); he was wearing a nice sort of dress wear, all black with a nice pair of dress shoes.
After watching him for some time, I figured he's not here to hurt me. He never said anything, didn't move, just looked at me in a sort of sorrowful expression.
After a while, I climbed back into bed where he was still in full view, and I lay there looking at him until I fell asleep about 20 minutes later.
I woke up the following morning and he was gone.
I live in an older home with windows that are hard to open and make a lot of noise, and a bedroom door that rattles at even the slightest touch. I sleep with my 2 windows and my door locked every night.
I have only seen this 'figure' once, but actually hope to see him again. I would like answers or help in figuring out what he could have wanted or is it a sort of sign or something.
