Smudging Just Isn't Enough Any More
Smudging (usually with a sage wand), became popular as the New Age movement gained popularity. You might well have done it yourself! A smudge stick is a bundle of sweet-smelling or fragrant herbs, with sage being a favorite, which is burnt to create smoke. This smoke is then wafted over or around the person, place or object to purify it or remove spirits or negative energy or cleanse it in some fashion. Where did it come from?It originated with Native American Indian tribes. It was their version of incense. It was used as a blessing and as a cleansing ritual prior to performing or taking part in ceremonies. It was also used just by itself to clear spirits from a place or person and bring them back into harmony again. What's it used for now?Firstly, it's fair to say that you can now find sage wands in virtually every area of the States and in many places in Europe. It is an idea which has spread and come to be accepted. When the Beatles went to India, all things Indian became fashionable, like incense sticks, clothing styles, sitar music, meditation and so on. In much the same way, smudging has grown in popularity along with interest in Native American culture and traditions. And that means that you can do it to your property and your person for exactly the same reasons that Native Americans did. Just because it came from a different culture doesn't necessarily mean that it has changed in what it does or what it can do. Does it work?Good question! The answer is both 'Yes' and 'No'. 'Yes', because quite often your intention is enough to change things and smudging is just a way of keeping you focused on what you want. But it won't last very long. Also 'Yes' because for small environmental problems it can still work most of the time. But mainly the answer has to be 'No'. If you have thought that it was the primary method of choice for clearing the environment, then it will not do that job any more. Things have changed!
Now, the sweet smell of sage is really only just a sweet smell. It never was able to do anything against electromagnetic pollution anyway. Also, newer and more toxic elements are showing up in the environment which simply do not respond to sageing. Non-human energies in particular are less and less likely to respond to this practice. What it boils down to is that you need something stronger than a fragrant herb to clear your environment nowadays. There's a whole new lot of energies coming to be noticed and as 2012 approaches with its associations of energetic chaos you'd be well advised to use or learn new techniques of environmental harmonization yourself.
