My youngest son's best friend as a young child was "Beth", a ghost child in our house. He would spend hours talking to her and described her to me. I asked why she was here and he said, "her family all moved away and left her here, so she was sad about that."
When we bought the house we were told about her and it never bothered us. She liked to open doors and sometimes had to be told firmly to please leave them closed...which she did. She never ventured downstairs, preferring to remain on the upper level.
The house was originally a small cottage which was raised and a second floor added and as far as I could find out, nobody ever died in the house. I believe that encouraging your child is helpful because it hasn't left any lasting effects on my son whatsoever.

Congratulations for taking such a thoughtful approach to this. So many people are scared because they don't understand.
The only time to be concerned is if the child shows any concern.
