Indigo Children; Are They Real?

I first heard the term 'indigo children' around about the year 2000. I may be a little off on the time, but it was certainly around then.

The thing which I find interesting is that hardly anyone I know understands why they are called by that name. Come to that, there's probably not many people who could give you reasons as to why some children should be called 'indigo'.

So, in order to help out, let me explain....

The term 'indigo children' was first used in 1982 by a woman, Nancy Ann Tappe, who claimed to be able to see the colors of auras around people.

Are you concerned about your child?

Then you can ask a question here to seek help or reassurance.

Or, if you want to tell us about your child please do! We love good stories

She claimed that she suddenly began seeing many more young people (born in the 1960's) with indigo auras.

Perhaps that might have been enough by itself, but the theme was later expanded on by two other people; Lee Caroll and Jan Tober. This husband and wife team authored a book in 1998 called 'The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived'.

This had material or information which came, they said, from channeling a being called Kryon.

Whatever the source, the book began to bring the idea of indigo children more to the fore.

Fairly soon, a definition and ideology began to build up around the concept.

Foremost was the belief that such people were the next evolutionary step. The reason for this was the idea that such children are highly sensitive and have 'paranormal' abilities such as ESP.

(For myself, I think that ESP is normal, not paranormal.)

Problems

The problem with the whole concept is that is based very much on very subjective viewpoints. Indeed the 17 traits most usually associated with indigos has been criticized as being so vague as to be capable of including virtually everyone at one time or another.

What all this has led to is the belief that such children have been wrongly labeled as ADHD, ADD, OCD, autistic or dyslexic.

Whether this is true or not, or whether such children really do exist or not is less relevant than the effects of believing that they exist.

Let me explain...

The New Age language, beliefs and values have permeated quite deeply into society. At the same time, criticism of education continues as do ideas of individualism and entitlement.

Taken together with the indigo children idea, this has helped bring about a greater interest and focus on learning difficulties and associated problems. At the same time, there is a keener awareness of the latent psychic abilities in everyone (including the children) and these are addressed in camps and activities specifically focused towards such children.

In other words, there is a closer appreciation of how we might be able to help children learn better. Attention is focused more on them and their behavior than before.

These changes, together with the ideas behind indigos, has helped produce the culture of 'indigo children' as being special.

But most importantly, because they are supposed to be the next evolutionary step, there are more and more of them about. That means that economically, whether they truly exist as such or not, it is becoming a good idea to target this sector.

Hence you will find increasing numbers of books, films, activities, TV programs and other media seeking to serve the children and their parents.

At the same time there is greater awareness of possible problems such as sleep disorders in children, depression and learning difficulties being addressed in new ways.

Is your child an indigo child?

Quite honestly, I couldn't say.

But what I can say is that all children are much more sensitive to their surroundings than has been generally accepted. Sleep problems in children may well be due to the nature of indigo children.

But whatever the real reason, the environment needs to be kept clean and clear for them. That is just as true at home as it is at school.

And the more people realize that, the fewer problems; emotional, educational and so on, there will be.
