Haunted Houses Can Look Really Normal!
Think of ‘typical’ haunted houses. In your mind do they have cracked windows, and an abandoned air? How about being old? Do they always look ‘dark’?
Those are pretty typical responses. But they are usually very wide of the mark! Is there a ‘typical’ haunted house? No, there isn’t!If a place is haunted it usually means that there is something non-human there which shouldn’t be and that something is usually not good for the inhabitants. You could call it a ghost, but it could be all sorts of different energies. Because of films and stories, most people expect a place that is haunted to feel eerie. Tendrils of mist can be seen at night. You almost expect spooky music! However, this is really not the norm. In all the years we have been doing this work, there has never been a place which was like that. Oh! Some of them were spooky enough, but they never looked spooky. Tell me more about haunted houses!Firstly, you should realize that it doesn’t just have to be a ghost which does the haunting. It can be any type of non-physical being which is present in the environment. And they can make themselves known through any number of ways.Secondly, the word ‘haunted’ itself has become less useful because of the way it has been used in popular films and newspapers. You almost expect things to jump off shelves, or lights to switch themselves on and off when you hear that word! A much more useful thing to say is that ‘there is a presence’ in the environment. It can cover a whole range of things without getting your mind moving at top speed dreaming up ghostly music and shadowy figures.... Having said that, hauntings can be of various types. Let’s look at them... - Seeing actual people or ‘things’
- Objects being moved
- A sense of being watched
- Other phenomena
Seeing thingsThis one is not that common, we have found. Certainly amongst adults it is less likely to happen, although it does occur. People have reported turning round to glimpse a human-like figure disappearing. Children are the best at seeing things. Sometimes they will appear to be looking at something you can’t see. If you have the type of relationship where you both feel safe talking about this sort of thing, you can ask them what they are looking at. You might well be surprised at an answer which says, “Oh, there’s that man and his dog again. He doesn’t look very happy. They’re just going out the door now.” Objects being movedThe idea of haunted houses having things flying around is a popular idea from films. In reality, it happens rarely. That is not to say that objects don’t get moved, It’s just that you don’t tend to see them as they are moving. Plenty of people have told us that an object they were certain was in one place has disappeared only to reappear later in another place entirely. Indeed, we know of someone whose dog disappeared for a week and turned up again in a locked cellar which had been searched thoroughly several times!A sense of being watchedThis is more common than you think and it’s not just paranoia! Often, when people are alone at night, and they are not watching TV or reading a book, they feel they are being watched. Again, we know of some women who have reported that they wake up at night to find two red eyes watching them from the bathroom! (The beings responsible were dealt with.)Other phenomenaChills and smells, animals acting in strange ways, children avoiding certain rooms, electrical equipment stopping working...All of these can be the result of a haunting (or of a presence). They are not infallible signs, but they can be helpful indicators.Do I live in haunted house? The chances are pretty good that you do.
Now, before you get all edgy and waiting for something spooky to happen, just think a bit.A haunting is when something not living as you are is in the same environment as you. It doesn’t have to be always doing something you don’t like. In fact, we once were asked to clear a home but to “leave the family ghost there, please, as we like him. He wears a stovepipe hat.” Some ghosts can be familiar and be part of the place. (We did the clearing and we got a report about a week later that all was OK, as they had seen their friendly ghost again.) So, think carefully about your environment. It’s unlikely you live in a place where you see ghosts and apparitions or where things keep disappearing and reappearing. You might not even feel as if you are being watched. But it is likely that there are things other than ordinary humans which are sharing your space. The point is, how do you feel about living in a haunted house?
