Ghosts:
Spooky, Eerie or Ordinary?
Ghosts are usually thought of as being frightening, eerie or spooky.
Usually, people don't want to get involved with them.
In other words, they've had a bad press!!
If you go looking on the internet, you'll find plenty of stories of
people being frightened by them (or saying that there are no such things),
and other people hunting them.
What you get very little of (and I know, because I've looked) is what
to do with them. That's where we come in!!
What are they?
I can't say that I have the definite answer to this one. However, most
people seem to agree that they are the spirits (or something similar)
of people who have died previously but who have not 'moved on' to the
right place. (Of course, what the 'right place' is, is also open to
debate.)
The ones which attract the most attention are the ones which can be
seen and have a story attached to them, maybe romantic or sad or just
plain mysterious. So you have old soldiers, mysterious dogs, ladies
who walk through walls, children with their toys and so on and so on.
What we have found, however, is that there are plenty of these beings
around the place and they hardly ever show themselves. And that's something
that seems hard for people to accept; that you can have a ghost and
not see it. Somehow, seeing them makes them real!
How do you know if you've got them if you can't see them?
If you think of them as just misplaced beings, then they can be picked
up pretty much anywhere.
However, some places lend themselves to being glopped with these spirits
more than others. For example, hospitals, battlefields and cemeteries
are obvious places.
It seems, from our experience, that some people either don't want to
admit they've died or they don't know it (in the case of sudden accidents,
for example). They seek out the living and, literally, hang around with
them.
Perhaps they are using or feeding off their energy. Perhaps they just
want company. In some cases, they are plain scared of what happens next.
Whatever the reason, if you have one, then you will probably feel or
act differently. Maybe you'll crave a drink when you normally don't
drink alcohol. Or you enjoy fried foods more when you've been eating
plain cooked meals. It really amounts to you being vigilant about yourself
and your actions.
Of course, there are always the stories of things being moved or thrown
around, strange noises, strange smells, a drop in temperature and so
on.
I can honestly say that, in all the clearings we've been involved in,
there has not been one case of things being thrown. There have been
a couple of cases of objects having been moved (but never while they
were watched) and quite a few of temperature drops. But that's about
it.
Yet the thrown objects and the really dramatic things are what people
always associate with specters.
Such activities are really more closely associated with poltergeists
(which means 'angry spirit'). And they are nearly always
associated with teenagers or younger children who seem to have the ability
to move objects without touching them. Usually, there are strong emotions
at work and the activity dies out as the person matures.
If such things continue and become worse or threatening, this usually
means that something other than a ghost is involved. These other paranormal
phenomena can take a variety of forms.
What can you do about them?
The important thing to remember is that a ghost really shouldn’t be
here. It should be somewhere else. It seems pointless hunting them (popularly
called ghostbusting) if you do nothing about them. They may mean
no harm at all, but their energy is interfering with yours and their
presence can be unsettling to your animals and young children, who often
seem to have the ability to see them better than adults. Therefore,
they need to be moved on, whether you can see them or not.
The easiest thing to do is, surprisingly, to ask them to move on.
Sometimes, they need to understand that they really are dead and that
they are in the wrong place. Usually, in most cases, this works well.
The spirits of animals are nearly always the easiest to deal with.
Sometimes, you have to ask for helpers to come to escort them over.
Some are so frightened by the process, or by the belief that they will
be punished, that they need guides to give them the courage to move
on.
For the vast majority of cases, this works well. In a few cases, other
tactics have to be used. But the point is, they can all be dealt with
in a way which helps them and the people whose environment they are
in.
Oh, and by the way, before you ask, I've never, ever seen one myself.
But that hasn't stopped me believing in ghosts!
