Faeries...
Busy Workers Or...?
Faeries (or fairies) are the stuff of childrens’ books and stories.
Aren’t they?
They couldn’t possibly be real. Could they?
Is this the sort of reaction you have when you see the word ‘faeries’
on a serious web page? A sort of almost wishing it to be true yet at
the same time dismissing it all as something childish?
You’re probably not alone in feeling like this about them.
Yes,
but ARE they real?
As I said when talking about devas
and other nature
spirits, the answer is that it depends on how you feel about them.
Now, to a child, they are very real. Just as real as breakfast. But to
us, older, wiser adults? Well, we may wish for them to be real, but we
might not really believe in them any more.
But is doesn’t matter. What they do is going to get done, no matter
whether you call it being done by these small beings or not.
What DO they do?
Well, once it was felt that they were quite spiteful and malicious beings.
They spirited people off, they stole children, they cast spells so that
people could not see what things were really like.
Then along came the Victorian painters and poets and that old
idea began to change so that they became the little winged beings who
were friends to flowers and small animals and insects.
In fact, it’s easier to think of a wider range of beings than just
faeries when we use this term. Brownies, elves, sprites, goblins and
so on can all be thought of as being the same type of creature.
All of these small beings are responsible primarily for making sure
things grow properly. They are the ones who help make a place fertile,
who give it life and beauty. We’ve had to ask for help from these sorts
of creatures on several occasions when the land simply didn’t have enough
vitality.
Think of them as being small pockets of energy which are distributed
amongst all the things which grow and you get an idea of their role.
If the devas have the master plan or blueprint, the it is up to the
faeries to bring it into reality. That’s why there’s not one simple
representation of a fairy, just one painting, but many different types.
That is because there are many roles for them to play, many plants for
them to tend and many different types of them are needed for an area
to be complete.
Even if you don’t consider faeries to be real, then consider instead
that, if you are going to grow something, all the ingredients have to
be there in the right proportions in order to make it happen. The proper
mixing of the ingredients at the right time is the role of.....whatever
you want to call it.
If it makes you happier to call all that organization ‘Nature’, then
do so. But it really makes more sense to call it the faeries. Doesn’t
it?
