Exorcism:
The Old Way
Exorcism is something which has dark overtones mainly because of the
media.
Films like 'The Exorcist' and 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose' have presented
the practice as desperate and dramatic. Almost a last-ditch attempt
at helping someone.
Perhaps that is because the practice means to 'free from evil spirits'
and, in many peoples' minds, that means casting out demons.
Demonic possession, the usual
reason for carrying out such an exercise, is not necessarily what you
might think, however.
The process is often referred to as Bell, Book and Candle (because
of the objects assocaited with it). But let's examine this practice
a little more closely and see what it all really means....
What happens?
Traditionally, it is associated with priests. It is of religious origin,
so it has always kept its religious overtones.
And, because it was religious, it means that the objects of the practice
were people who were considered to be possessed by forces or beings.
These were 'against' the forces of the religious order (any religion
can be applied here). And, because they were 'against' there is the
idea of a battle or a war between two opposing forces.
Because of this battle idea, so the process is carried out in a form
of contest or battle of wills.
Contrary to popular belief, however, there does not have to be a priest
present, merely someone who is able to do what is necessary with the
belief that it will work.
That means that there is no set formula for performing an exorcism,
neither is there only one faith or religion which believes in it. It
is common to many beliefs and the central idea covers a long period of time.
Is it safe?
There have been deaths associated with those undergoing this process.
Certainly, it seems to be something which can bring about violent methods,
although that is not always true.
It seems also that the people being exorcised are suffering greatly,
although it is not always clear what they are suffering from.
Our view
Our view is that, by taking a position of being in conflict with whatever
it is affecting the person, there is greater chance of resistance and
problems.
Our preferred approach is to try to deal with the problem by seeking
what it is that is required to be done to allow the 'whatever' to leave.
For this reason we have not been involved in any of what might be considered
'traditional' exorcisms, but we have helped people who have been exhibiting
signs of possession.
We also prefer to avoid the idea of demonic possession as it tends
to bring its own bias into the situation.
Our understanding is that there are many things in the universe, most
of them want to be left alone but most of them will accept help to go
where they should be. Usually,
it is our experience that any cases which could have been labeled as
'demonic possession' are simply misplaced beings who have little idea
of the havoc the are wreaking on their inadvertent hosts.
So, although we do not act as exorcists are thought to act, we probably
still perform exorcisms of a kind.
