Is Demonic Possession Real?
Demonic possession is considered to be when a human is taken over by the Devil or one of his assigned advocates. The Old Testament has no references to it whilst the New Testament has many. If we are talking only of the Christian interpretation, then it is difficult to find a definition which everyone can agree upon. Some of the symptoms of demonic possession mentioned include - erased memories or personalities
- convulsions
- fainting as if one were dying
- the ability to curse/blaspheme in languages unknown to the person
- the ability to find secret things, read the mind, and divine future happenings
- the ability to make physical efforts abnormal for that person
- the act of spitting or vomiting every object the demons would have made the person swallow
- fear and/or hatred of holy objects
- the inability to say the word "Christ"
You can see that this can cover a wide range of issues and there is no agreement that any or all of them need signify demonic possession. An old ideaIf we widen the term to include non-Christian ideas, then it is obvious that many cultures, going back to the Sumerians, share the idea that humans could be interfered with and controlled by things called demons or devils. However, if you alter the meaning of the phrase 'demonic possession' just a little, you can think of it either as a human having a demon, or of a demon having a human. (Of course, you can also have animals and plants included in this description.) In the first case, where a human possesses a demon, the human is afflicted by something which has been labeled as a devil. In the second case, which would be much more serious, the devil controls entirely the human host. If we take the first idea as the most common (in fact, in our personal experience, it is the only explanation worth anything at all), then it would help explain many problems experienced by people. But the key point is that we don't have to use the term 'demon' to explain the cause of the problems. Cases of demonic possessionFirstly, before giving some examples from our own work, we should tell you what our view of demonic possession is. To us, it is a serious energetic imbalance, usually caused by a non-human consciousness which has somehow become entangled in a person's energy field. It manifests its presence in different ways. 1. The possessed studentThis is probably closest to the classical example that we have worked with.An honors student of about 16 was referred to us because, over a period of eight months her grades had seriously deteriorated and she had taken to telling highly improbable stories. Things like a man was waiting to kidnap her from school, or that whenever she tried to sleep, she saw a pair of red eyes staring at her from the corner of the room. She was tested (negatively) for drugs and was about to be referred for a psychiatric assessment. This was after having experienced a fugue state where she 'came to' in the kitchen holding a butcher's knife. She was looking at her wrists and hearing a voice say 'your wrists are too bare'. She knew that she was being told to slash her wrists. She fled to a neighbors' house. We found that there was a being attached to her which desperately wanted to return home. This was an emergency session, done the night before the assessment was due. We persuaded the being to leave by offering it help to go (it was a slightly scary thing at first!). Eventually it went. We heard the next day that the girl had had her first good nights' sleep for eight months and had not seen the eyes. In fact, she never saw them again and quickly returned to her normal ways. The assessment was canceled as she was obviously better. The point to note here is that the girl did not know that we were going to work on her that night, yet she still showed relief from it. Now, to another person, that might have been called demonic possession..... But just think how many people are in danger of being wrongly diagnosed or treated in ways which are not addressing the underlying issue. Unless you are willing to see things in new ways, it is unlikely that there will be new solutions to mental health problems.
2. A spate of suicidesAnother case concerned a small town with a spate of suicides. The population was a few thousand only. The suicides were strange. For example, a man stopped by the police for being (very slightly) over the limit after attending a family function, with a pregnant wife, a new house completed and starting happy retirement, went back to his car and shot himself. Or the young man who, despite having got over his mother's death the year before, and getting on with his life and family, suddenly committed suicide. There were two other suicides, all of them happening in the same area of the town, all males and all without obvious reason. Upon examining this a little further, it became clear that another non-human being was trapped in the wrong place and trying to get home via these men, causing them to suicide. After it was dealt with, the suicides stopped. Not a 'typical' demonic possession, but more the type which is suffered by many people. A similar set of suicides have occurred in South Wales in just one town. 18 suicides, both male and female, have happened over one year in one town. Not surprisingly, people are baffled and afraid. In earlier times, there would have been talk of devils and demonic possession and witches would have been found and burned. 3. The demon treeThis was a case where the focus of concern was a tree. We were engaged in clearing a space for a client which was particularly unpleasant in many ways. In the course of the work we found that there was a big problem with one of the trees. Upon talking this over with the client, we found that she had long hated that tree and was going to cut it down. We dealt with the issue and the problem transferred to one of her dogs, who promptly went to spend long periods of time underneath the branches of the problem tree! After dealing with THAT issue, finally the problem went and the client was happy, even going so far as to say that she rather liked the tree now. Again, not obvious or typical demonic possession but it could certainly be seen like that. Because of the variety of ways in which such problems can present themselves, we think it safest not to dismiss demonic possession out of hand. But, on the other hand, we don't always look to that as the first or only reason for problems. In our line of work, things are not necessarily clear cut!
