Are Angels And Demons Real?

Angels and demons, good and bad, light and dark.

Simple divisions of the world.

But are angels and demons real and, if so, is this the proper way of looking at them?

angels and demons1

Are they real?

That depends on how you look at it.

Let’s take demons, for example. If you were asked to list what makes a demon a demon, your list would probably include some of the following:

  • an evil spirit
  • a fallen angel
  • can be summoned
  • seeks to control a human
  • is ugly
  • maybe has wings
  • works for Satan or the Devil
  • can appear in various disguises
Not bad for starters, is it?

Yet how true is all this? If angels and demons are real beings, how come we don’t come across them more often? And where did we get all the ideas in that list from?

Firstly, demons are referred to in many religions over a long span of time. But if that is the only word available to people to explain strange and disturbing behaviors in their neighbors, then that’s the word they’ll use. (It’s like the old saying that, if the only tool you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail.)

But what if the term ‘demons’ was used because there wasn’t a word for aliens or extra-terrestrials or invisible entities or anything like that?

So you end up with ideas like demonic possession because that’s the only way that people could describe it.

What about angels?

Exactly the same arguments apply here. I could make a list of angelic attributes and you would have broad agreement with it.

It wouldn’t make them any more real.

Except.....

If you really believe in them, believe they truly exist, then they are real to you and you will see them in your life. You will be able to explain happenings as being caused by angels.

In those cases, angels (and demons as well, presumably) are real to such people.

If you want to really explore the idea of angels in much more depth, I'd suggest you go to Roger's site which has so much more than I can give space to here... Gentle Angel Lessons.

What’s wrong with believing in them?

Absolutely nothing at all, if that makes complete sense to you.

However, in the course of our work, Maggie and I have come to realize one very important thing. And it is this....

If you see things as good and bad, light and dark, or angels and demons, then that is what your world is going to be like. There are always going to be good people and bad people, as if there was nothing in the middle. People are not either one thing or another. We are all a mixture of both, and that mixture changes all the time.

If you label some beings as demons, then you are instantly setting yourself up for a fight, for a struggle. (You must be, unless you see yourself as a demon!) You’ve put ourselves at one end of the spectrum and now you have to do battle!

It’s much easier (and more helpful) to think of beings, no matter what they truly are, as doing the best they can. They may be in the wrong place at the wrong time. They might be causing distress to people without knowing it. They might be deliberately interfering. But the point is, they are trying their best.

If we accept that attitude, then we are in a position to help them, not fight them.

If such beings truly do exist, then I think it’s a fair bet that they don’t look a bit like the popular ideas of them.

They could look just like you and me!
